NEW YORK, July 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Over thirty-nine percent of
Americans expect to purchase an average of three high-end
digital electronics products by the end of 2005, according to
the results of a new Ziff Davis Media "Digital Life in
America" study of more than 1,000 Americans. The study
which was released today reveals that, in the next six months
Americans plan to purchase more video game consoles, digital
cameras and digital video recorders, flat-panel TVs, laptops and
Voice of the Internet Protocols (VoIP). Participants also
revealed how different attitudes, experiences and prior
ownership affect their intent to purchase each category.
The
"Digital Life in America" survey, which is the first
installment in what will be a quarterly series of surveys, is
being released in anticipation of Ziff Davis Media's popular
consumer electronics event, DigitalLife. Heading into its second
year, DigitalLife -- which will be held October 14-16, 2005 at
the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City --
provides a unique opportunity for consumers to preview these
products and, in many cases, purchase them directly from the
show floor.
Past
and Future Product Purchases
During
the first six months of 2005, Americans said their households
bought digital cameras, desktop PCs and MP3 players more than
the other digital technology products included in the survey. By
the end of 2005, and in time for the important holiday buying
season, the study reveals that twice as many Americans expect to
get video game consoles for their households as acquired them in
the first half of the year (11 percent compared with 6 percent).
Furthermore, sales of digital video recorders and Internet-based
telephone services (VoIP) will grow.

Current
Digital Electronics Owners Buy More Than Others
Prior
ownership of digital electronic products can be a good indicator
of intent to acquire related goods. For example, ownership of a
satellite radio device is one of the best predictors of the
intent to acquire many other digital electronics products
including MP3 players, flat-panel TVs, photo printers, digital
video recorders, VoIP, video game consoles and other satellite
radio devices. And MP3-player owners are far more likely to
expect to get a desktop PC in the next six months than Americans
overall (24 percent compared to ten percent). An impetus for new
desktop PCs is that MP3 users need to quickly download and
archive vast quantities of music files.
Feared
Obsolescence Not a Challenge to Adoption
The
"Digital Life in America" Study confirms that
Americans already own and, by the end of 2005, expect to
purchase many more digital technology products. While many of
these products have a short life cycle and are constantly
updated with new and advanced technologies to improve their
performance, the study demonstrates that Americans' awareness of
this fact -- particularly as it relates to desktop PCs, digital
cameras and photo printers -- will not stop them from purchasing
these devices.
Survey
Method
The
"Digital Life in America" survey was conducted June
17-21, 2005 via a telephone survey among 1,016 adults age 18 or
older by ICR, a research company in Media, PA. The
results are projectable to the U.S. adult population.
