MONEY MAGAZINE / ICR POLL: DO YOU HAVE A PRE-NUP?

-- Parents recommend one for their children; very few have their own --

NEW YORK, NY [March 8, 2006] A recent Money Magazine / ICR survey of 1,016 Americans revealed that only 1% of Americans who are married or planning to be in the next year currently have a pre- or post-nuptial agreement. Just another 2% reported that they plan to write one. On the contrary, nearly one-in-five (17%) married Americans whose children are unmarried are likely to encourage their children to write a pre-nuptial agreement prior to getting married.

The biggest reasons cited for not having a pre- or post-nuptial agreement were:

  • They believe they will never divorce (43%).
  • One-third believes marriage is an emotional commitment and financial agreements should not be made (33%).
  • They do not have enough money to make it worthwhile (10%).
  • Finally, 5% said they could not ask their significant other to sign a pre or post-nuptial agreement even if they wanted one.

With wedding season quickly approaching, 10% of unmarried Americans reported that they are planning on getting married in the next year. Of those who plan to marry in the next year, they are more likely to be younger (16% <35 years old) and, interestingly, more likely to be college educated (17% college education or higher).
