Decorating

,

(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Nov. 30, 2004
--Too full of turkey to feel the holiday cheer? Work off that
Thanksgiving stuffing by turning your attention to trimmings of
another sort.
That's
what most Americans intend to do, as 61 percent of those polled
say they will trim their homes with holiday decorations this
season, according to a "Quarterly Lifestyle Trends
Survey" conducted by ICR exclusively for HGTV and
its parent company, Scripps Networks.
And
while men and women are split on who actually does the
decorating - with 44 percent of the total claiming the activity
as their responsibility - they agree on the motive. "It
puts me in the holiday mood" is the number one answer,
provided by 66 percent of the respondents when asked why they do
outdoor holiday decorating.
Others
enjoy holiday decorating for the family interaction, with nearly
one-fourth (22 percent) citing "It's something the whole
family can do together," as their motive. Only 9 percent
fess up to a Grinch-like attitude to the chore, saying
"It's something my family expects."
By
far, the most popular outdoor holiday decoration? It's holiday
lights, with 69 percent saying they plan to hang them outside
their homes this year, and another 25 percent of those surveyed
saying they will string lights on their trees. Wreathes (21
percent), Santa figures (16 percent), reindeer figures (15
percent) and icicle lights (14 percent) also are popular among
holiday revelers.
HGTV,
one of the leading lifestyle networks in television, offers a
wide array of programming for those looking for a little holiday
inspiration with its "12 Days of Christmas Specials"
that begins this week and carries through next week. For those
with interior motives, HGTV offers Christmas Room by Room (Dec.
1 at
8 p.m.
), Divine Design Christmas (Dec. 2 at
8 p.m.
), Home to Go Holiday Special (Dec. 3 at
8 p.m.
) and Holiday Design on a Dime (Dec. 4 at
8 p.m.
). To spread the cheer outdoors, HGTV's on-air celebration
includes Outer Spaces for the Holidays (Dec. 4 at
1 p.m.
), A Very Merry Curb Appeal (Dec. 5 at
8 p.m.
) and Outta Control Christmas (Dec. 19 at
9 p.m.
). The network's companion website, HGTV.com, features a
comprehensive package of holiday ideas and projects, including
holiday gifts and videos with step-by-step instructions to make
ornaments, decorations, gifts and more for the holiday season.
Fortunately
for the neighbors, only 4 percent of respondents to HGTV's
"Lifestyle Trends Survey" admit to being "outta
control" in their holiday decorating. For most (60
percent), traditional decorations rule, with an additional 20
percent preferring to "fun and lighthearted"
decorations.
This
"Quarterly Lifestyle Trends Survey" was conducted by
telephone
Nov. 6-9, 2004
with a total sample size of 890 adults for a +/- 3 percent level
of accuracy.
