MONEY MAGAZINE/ICR POLL: MAJORITY OF AMERICANS
LIKE WHERE THEY LIVE
-- Jobs, Schools and Crime issues rank as the
top reasons --
NEW YORK, NY [July
19, 2006] According to a recent Money Magazine/ICR poll, the vast
majority of Americans (88%) indicated they like the city or town in which they
currently live.
Americans who very much like where they live were more likely:
Those
with higher household incomes (71% $75K+)
Those
with higher education (68% college degree or more)
Homeowners
(65%).
While the
reasons to look at a new city
or town (if they were to move in the next year) were varied, the top three
mentioned characteristics Americans indicated are most important when included:
1. Employment
opportunities were good (14%)
2. Schools
are good (11%)
3. Crime rate
is low (9%)
As may be expected, more Americans
of working age (18% ages 18-54) find good employment opportunities to be important. Good high school or elementary schools were
more important among those with higher incomes (16% $75K+), those ages 18-54
(15%), females (14%) and those living in metropolitan areas of the U.S.
(12%).
The top
characteristic Americans most dislike about the city or town they currently
live in is too much congestion (16%). Those who agree too much congestion is the
least liked aspect of the city or town they currently reside in include
Americans who:
Live in the West (23%) or South (19%)
Live in metropolitan areas of the U.S. (18%)
Also more
likely to cite congestion as their least liked aspect of where they live are
those age 35 and over (19%) and those with incomes over $75,000 (22%)
